Home...

Ambassadors will hold Monthly group sessions to allow high school and college students the opportunity to share their personal stories with both able and disable individuals.  The objective is to:

  • Educate students with and without disabilities to self-advocate, become professional leaders, and learn problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Address student issues to increase community awareness about the positive impact people with disabilities can make on their community and society.
  • Educate the community about services, programs, and functions of Barbara Jordan Endeavors .
  • Gather information and ideas for a quarterly news letter.
  • Develop a city-wide partnership with various organizations and businesses serving the Disability Community.
  • Support and join Chambers of Commerce to create Disability Business Coalition by promoting community involvement, through the Chambers’ Disabilities Business outreach activities for Employment of People with Disabilities.

Barbara Jordan  
1936 - 1996

Barbara Jordan graduated magna cum laude from Texas Southern University in 1956 and from Boston University Law School in 1959.  Jordan campaigned for the Texas House of Representatives in 1962 and 1964. Her persistence won her a seat in the Texas Senate in 1966, becoming the first African American state senator since 1883 and the first black woman to serve in that body.  In 1972, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives, becoming the first black woman from a Southern state to serve in the House.
